This is similar to the real NBA rule.
REAL NBA RULE: 2nd Rounders Protection… It what is being called “The Gilbert Arenas” rule, teams with 2nd round draft choices entering free agency as a restricted free agents can only be offered a first year salary equal to the media exception – allowing for teams to retain their own restricted free agents. The 2nd year of the deal can be any amount that fits under the salary cap, but prevents teams from losing players.
When a player is drafted in the 2nd round, their contract is automatically a 2 year minimum. When their contract is up, they become a restricted free agent. The team that owned the players' rights and bird years prior to the player becoming a restricted FA reserves the right to match any contract that has been offered to him while he's is a restricted FA coming off his rookie contract (no matter what the team's cap situation is).
An Alternative Version: A team, who owns the rights/bird years of a 2nd round draftee, has the option of attaining an addition year to that player's contract. Thus giving them enough bird years (3), when that player becomes a free agent.

I like the alt version cause restricted FA's in sims are boring.

I like the alt version cause restricted FA's in sims are boring. yes, i've been in leagues with both of these versions, but the alternate version is more utilized. I think it will be a great addition to our league.

another thing we can implement is giving a team the option to take 1-2 years off the contracts of their 1st round picks.

I like idea B where you have the right for an automatic third year. I also like that you can take off two years on a 1st rd pick too. One thing that also may be interesting is that instead of having a secretive free agency, we something that I know all very good leagues do. We have a board topic on this board dedicated for off-season free agency, where each thread is a free agent being bid on, and you bid on them there. This would also be good because it will test who is really the best GM in this league.

We'll have a league vote during the off-season to decide on the FA thing, and you will be given the option on 2,3, or 4 year contracts for your first round draft picks

2nd rounders will have a 1 or 2 year option and if you pickup the 2nd year option you will be able to choose whether you want to use your extra bird year on your pick or not, cause I was thinking maybe only having that option evey other year or you can save it for next year

Because think this should be done before we go into the free agency process.

so you can add a 3rd year when the player is in his last contract year (2nds round players)

TheYoungOne said a one or two year option, so i'm guessing a 3rd or a 4th year on his contract.
