Pacers Press ConferenceThe Indiana Pacers are currently the worst team in the NBL, after new GM Ryan Berger came in and traded away most of the team's talent for draft picks. Berger: " I understand most Pacers fans are furious with my moves thusfar as general manager, but I please ask that you fans be patient as I am confident that this franchise has nowhere to go but up. We have spent a lot of time scouting the college players who have declared(or are considering declaring) for the 2008 NBL Draft, and I promise you all that we will surely but together a great squad for the coming years. Now, before I go, does anyone here have any questions?"

Obviously your rebuilding, but how long do you think it will take for you to be a top 5 team in the East?

Berger: "Well, I may be more optimistic in my thinking than most, but I believe that if everything lines up well with the draft and we can bring in some more expiring contracts to open up space for Free Agency, I believe our team could be a contender in, hopefully, three years or so. Possibly even two if we can move some of our later draft picks higher up in the draft."

The Pacers will now be lead by young stars such as Luol DengBerger: "I am happy with the moves I have made in the past day. I feel I have greatly affected my team and how they will perform this season, and have greatly added to the amount of talent my team has at the moment. In necessity, I made Jeff Foster, Tim Thomas, Cuttino Mobley, and Marquis Daniels, whom the former owner signed to horrid contracts, and four first-round draft picks into Tyrus Thomas, Luol Deng, Gerald Green, Dominic James, Kirk Hinrich, a couple guys in Cruz Daniels and Stan Allen that could someday be solid players after some work in Sioux Falls, and a great backup with an expiring contract in Andre Miller. I also now have some room under the salary cap to sign a few more guys in Free Agency, this year and for years to come. I will still be looking to make another move or two, but only if I feel it will greatly help my team. I would love to answer any questions regarding my team at this time."

With such a young team how long do you think it will be before they explode into a championship caliber team?

Berger: "Honestly, I cannot give you an accurate answer at this point in time. Until myself and Coach (Tyron) Harris have more time to effectively scout our players and help them grow as mature veterans in the league, we cannot make any assumptions based on our team's potential. Expect a better answer sometime after training camp."

Berger: "The recent addition of Center Randolph Morris via Free Agency has given our squad a great young starting five in Morris - Thomas - Deng - Green - James. We still look to try and fix a few problems in our individual games, including Morris and Thomas' ability to score and Green and James' ball-handling skills. I fear we will be a one-dimensional scoring unit prone to giving up turnovers if we don't solve these issues. Now, does anyone have any questions regarding the team?"

You have quietly built up a team that in the next 2-3 years could be considered a complete powerhouse of a franchise. My question to you is that with such a talented group, will you be looking to trade for a center or trying to build the rest of the way through the draft?

Berger: "We will currently be experimenting with Randolph Morris, who is only 22 years old, 2 years removed from the University of Kentucky. He will be working towards the starting role this pre-season with Troy Murphy. Either way, he looks to earn a great deal of playing time this season and we will see where we are with him at season's end. Any more questions?"

What do you expect to do with veterans such as Andre Miller, Jamaal Tinsley, & Kirk Hinrich who have been capable starters for teams at the PG position? It's only a matter of time before they become disgruntled and it could disrupt the chemistry within the young nucleus of yours.

Berger: "Those questions should be answered after the pre-season, but after what we've seen from our training camps, Dominic James should become the starting Point Guard. We plan on giving Kirk Hinrich some playing time at Shooting Guard, and he will be given the opportunity to start, but must beat out Gerald Green. Jamaal Tinsley started for us last year, but did not produce to my likings. He has been involved in many trade talks. Both he and the aging Andre Miller just don't have a place in this ballclub. We would really like to trade them somewhere where they could see a great amount of playing time."

After what seemed to be a great season coming to a close in which the Pacers were positioned to be in the playoffs coming into the final stretch of the season, a great performance in the final month of the season by rookie PG Dominic James was only enough to earn the Pacers three wins, plummeting the team from the 8 seed in the playoffs to a mid-range lottery team. Indiana GM Ryan Berger has made it clear that nobody is safe on the team, and could be moved at any moment if he believed the deal would better the team, especially after he proved he could improve the team, moving from 22 wins in 2007 to 33 in 2008. What lies ahead for this Pacers franchise is untold. Berger: "Fans of the organization: Normally, I would apologise for your team's sub-par play of the 2008 season, but this time, I will not, for I believe this season has been great in our rebuilding period. We gained 11 more wins than we did in all of the 2007 season, and until our "breakdown" during the last month, were projected to be a playoff team. I ask that you please bear with me and the rest of the staff as our team is showing signs of growth and great things to come."
